Merle Frohms is a German soccer goalkeeper. She has been under contract with Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg since July 2022.
Merle Frohms was born on January 28, 1995, in Celle, Germany. She started her youth career in the local team Fortuna Celle but moved to VfL Wolfsburg in 2011. She played also for the German national youth team since 2010.
Already in the 2011/2012 season she belonged to the squad of the first division team but did not play. On December 9, 2012, she finally made her first division debut in a 3-0 away win against FSV Gutersloh 2009. With Wolfsburg she won the treble in the 2012/2013 season, consisting of the German championship, the DFB Cup, and the 2013 Champions League victory.
In the 2013/2014 season, she was mainly between the posts for Wolfsburg’s second team in the 2nd Bundesliga North and won the Champions League for the second time in May 2014, although, like when she won the title in 2013, she did not play as a substitute goalkeeper behind Almuth Schult. For the 2018/2019 season, she moved to league rivals SC Freiburg, where she was the first goalkeeper. For the 2020/2021 season, she moved to Eintracht Frankfurt and signed a contract until 2023. On February 25, 2022, Merle Frohms announced her move from Frankfurt to VfL Wolfsburg, where she signed a three-year contract until June 30, 2025.
At the international level, Merle Frohms played at the U17 European Championship in 2012 and saved two penalties from the French players in the penalty shootout in the final and thus played a key role in winning the European Championship title. Also in 2012, she took part in the U17 World Cup and reached the semi-finals with her team, which they lost 2-1 to North Korea. In 2013, Merle Frohms qualified with the U19 national team for the European Championships in Wales, where she played in two tournaments and reached the semi-finals with the team.
She made her Germany U20 debut in March 2014 in a 4-2 win over England at the Six Countries Tournament in Spain. With this, she also took part in the U20 World Cup held in Canada from August 5 to 24, 2014, played the third group match against Brazil’s selection, and win after extra time by 1-0 in the final against Nigeria’s selection World champion.
She made her senior national team debut on October 6, 2018, in Essen in a 3-1 win in a friendly against the Austrian national team. For the 2019 World Cup, she was appointed to the German team as the third goalkeeper by the new national coach. She was the number 1 goalkeeper of the German team at the Euro 2022. The German team reached the final but failed because of England and became Vice European Champion. She was consistently in goal in all six games.
