Maitane Lopez is a professional Spanish footballer who plays as a midfielder for Liga F club Atletico Madrid and the Spain women’s national team. She is a European U17 Champion and U19 runner-up.
Maitane Lopez Millan was born on March 13, 1995, in Aguilas, Spain. Her father was a professional footballer, who played for Eibar in the Spanish Secunda Division. She was introduced to football at the soccer school Son Cotoner and the youth football club Sporting Ciutat de Palma.
In 2009, Maitane Lopez started playing with the senior team of Ciutat de Palma, which played in the Second Division, at the age of 15. In their first season, they finished in ninth position, but they fought for promotion to the First Division in the 2010/2011 seasons, in which they finished fourth, and in 2011/2012 in which they were runners-up in their group. Maitane Lopez ended up being captain of the team. In 2012, the club was forced to resign from the Second Division due to the economic crisis caused by the non-payment of the aid stipulated by public institutions.
In 2012, Maitane Lopez signed with Collerense, where she made her debut in the Spanish Primera Division. Her first goal came on November 25, 20122 in the 4-3 comeback against Real Sociedad. In their first season in the Spanish Primera Division, they finished in 13th position and Maitane Lopez played 28 games, scoring 5 goals. Her good performances led to her being nominated for the Soccer Draft awards as the right-handed center with the greatest projection. In the 2013/2014 season, she played all the matches and they reached the 10th position. She was once again a finalist in the Soccer Draft awards in the central defense category. In the 2014/2015 season, Maitane Lopez played all the games again and the team Collerense avoided relegation by only two points. Maitane Lopez was once again nominated for the Soccer Draft awards for the third consecutive year in the central position. She was one of the players who played the most minutes in the season and was on the previous list of the Spanish National Team to play at the World Cup.
In 2015, Maitane Lopez signed with Levante. On October 11, she scored his first goal against Sporting de Huelva. In 2016 she was chosen in the Soccer Draft Eleven in the right midfield position. During her first season with Levante, she played 26 games and the team finished fourth. In the Copa de la Reina they were eliminated in the semifinals by FC Barcelona. In the 2016/2017 season, she played 24 league games, and they were fourth in the league again, reaching quarter-finals of the Copa de la Reina. She proved to be one of the top players for the team during the next seasons.
After five seasons at the Levantine club, in 2020 Maitane Lopez signed for Real Sociedad. She made her debut on October 11, 2020, in matchday 2 of the league against Deportivo de la Coruna with a 2-0 victory. With the team, she played 30 games and finished fifth in the league. She scored her only goal with Real Sociedad, opening the scoring against Betis on January 27, 2021, a game that ended in a 5-1 victory. In the Copa de la Reina they were eliminated in the quarterfinals by Atletico Madrid.
In July 2021, Maitane Lopez signed for Atletico Madrid. She made her debut on September 4, 2021, scoring the goal that opened the scoring in the 5-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano on the first matchday. She began the season as the undisputed starter and due to her good performances she was called up again with the Spanish national team. In November she was chosen as the best player of the month. Atletico Madrid finished the season in fourth position, one point behind third place, which gave the last place to play in the Champions League. They were finalists in the Super Cup, in which they lost to FC Barcelona.
Maitane Lopez played for the youth Spanish national teams, winning the European U17 Championship and being runner-up at the European U19 Championship.
